On Beat
Off Beat (Lead-in)
Off Beat (Lag)
On Beat Jump Scare
Sound and visual sting at the same time. In this sequence, the ghost shout and start moving at the same time.
Off Beat (Lead-in) Jump Scare
Sound sting before the visual. In this sequence, the sound sting ( old lady's sound ) first, followed by the reveal of the old lady beside her.
Off Beat (Lag) Jump Scare
Sound sting after the visual. In this sequence, Natre ( the ghost ) appears on screen first, followed by the sound sting.
Summary
On beat jump scare is the most straight forward approach, and it is the most preferred method in delivering high intensity jump scare. Off beat jump scare is usually used to convey confusion, vagueness, or weirdness. It can also be used to soften the jump scare intensity. These are not the only effects from different jump scare timing. Take your time to observe and feel each jump scare, and experiment with the timing for your own game.
